This hands-on workshop provides audiologists and physicians with practical “take home” information on objective auditory assessment of infants. Attendees will be introduced to a protocol for the diagnosis of infant hearing loss with a test battery consisting of aural immittance measures (tympanometry and acoustic reflexes), otoacoustic emissions (OAEs), auditory brainstem response (ABR), and the auditory steady state response (ASSR). The workshop will include hands-on demonstrations of each of the four objective auditory techniques using clinical devices. Attendees will be given handouts including: 1) A copy of the PPT presentations, 2) Relevant articles, 3) PDF version of the original 1992 Handbook of Auditory Evoked Responses (Hall, 1992).

Public Health Planning for Hearing Impairment 430 million people in the world have moderate or worse hearing loss. 80% live in low- and middle-income (LMI) countries. In order to address this issue on a large scale, a public health approach must be adopted and integrated into existing health systems. However, there is a huge shortage of health workers trained in the public health approach to hearing health and planning in LMI countries. The training workshop called Public Health Planning for Hearing Impairment was started in 2009 at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to address this shortage. The purpose of the Training Workshops is to expand capacity building for public health knowledge and skills in ear and hearing health amongst professionals and health planners. The aim is to create a global network of health professionals trained in public hearing health and planning to address the challenge of hearing loss. So far 2,274 health workers from 71 countries have been trained in PHPHI in 23 centres around the world. This pre-workshop will give participants an introduction to public hearing health and the Training Workshop on Public Health Planning for Hearing Impairment. The workshop will be interactive with Q & A sessions, case studies and exercises. TUFTS – Med Ed Building The address is 145 Harrison Ave., Boston, MA 02111. The building is located in the Chinatown area of Boston — part of the Tufts Health Sciences campus. When you arrive, look for signage that says “MedEd Building” or “Medical Education Building”. Use the main entrance at Harrison Ave. Once inside, you’ll begin your way towards Room 316. Getting to Room 316: After entering the building, check the directory or signage for floor numbers and room numbers. Room 316 means you want the 3rd floor (since the first digit ‘3’ indicates the floor). Use the elevators or stairs to go up to the 3rd floor. Once on the 3rd floor, follow the hallway signs for room numbers in the 300-series until you locate Room 316.
