Pre-Conference Workshops Thursday October 23
Workshops
The following pre-session workshops are being held in conjunction with the 2025 Annual Conference of the Coalition for Global Hearing Health (CGHH). Workshops will be held at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear hospital located Boston (MEEI) and Tufts University School of Medicine (TUFTS), on Thursday October 23, 2025.
The workshops provide more in-depth material and generally have more interaction or hands-on participation than is possible during the presentations at the conference. Enrolment in each pre-session workshops is essential.

Field Based Ear Mold Lab A critical component of successful and sustainable community-based ear and hearing care services in low – and middle – income countries, is prompt provision of earmolds for dispensed hearing aids. Although, earmold laboratories can ensure success, the time to train and resources required for production can be prohibitive. However, when costs are kept low, the earmold lab can become a serendipitous cottage industry opportunity in a region that will benefit from a fiscal boost. This workshop will provide information about materials required as well as the protocol for production. The model created by the Ears, Inc. (a charitable organization), has been used effectively in many parts of the world, and enhanced local economy with much needed cottage industry skills. The workshop will provide instruction for production materials, and suggest the infra-structure for establishing the earmold lab, as well as recommend training procedures for the local program partners. |

Auditory Electrophysiology Hands-on Workshop
This hands-on workshop provides audiologists and physicians with practical “take home” information on objective auditory assessment of infants. Attendees will be introduced to a protocol for the diagnosis of infant hearing loss with a test battery consisting of aural immittance measures (tympanometry and acoustic reflexes), otoacoustic emissions (OAEs), auditory brainstem response (ABR), and the auditory steady state response (ASSR). The workshop will include hands-on demonstrations of each of the four objective auditory techniques using clinical devices. Attendees will be given handouts including: 1) A copy of the PPT presentations, 2) Relevant articles, 3) PDF version of the original 1992 Handbook of Auditory Evoked Responses (Hall, 1992).

Creative Electrophysiology and Behavioural Hearing Assessment in Low- and Medium-Income Countries This session provides a practical review of clinically feasible protocols and strategies for the identification and diagnosis of hearing loss of children and adults in low- and middle-income countries. Topics include: 1) creative problem solving, 2) hearing assessment with limited resources and simple equipment, 3) clinical decision making with limited data, 4) application of telehealth principles and practices in hearing assessment, 5) the role of technicians and facilitators in clinical service delivery, 6) the use of automated equipment for hearing screening and accurate diagnosis of hearing loss by non-audiology personnel. Attendees will be provided with handouts including a copy of the PPT presentation and relevant articles. |

Public Health Planning for Hearing Impairment 430 million people in the world have moderate or worse hearing loss. 80% live in low- and middle-income (LMI) countries. In order to address this issue on a large scale, a public health approach must be adopted and integrated into existing health systems. However, there is a huge shortage of health workers trained in the public health approach to hearing health and planning in LMI countries. The training workshop called Public Health Planning for Hearing Impairment was started in 2009 at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to address this shortage. The purpose of the Training Workshops is to expand capacity building for public health knowledge and skills in ear and hearing health amongst professionals and health planners. The aim is to create a global network of health professionals trained in public hearing health and planning to address the challenge of hearing loss. So far 2,274 health workers from 71 countries have been trained in PHPHI in 23 centres around the world. This pre-workshop will give participants an introduction to public hearing health and the Training Workshop on Public Health Planning for Hearing Impairment. The workshop will be interactive with Q & A sessions, case studies and exercises. |
